Removal and Prevention of Unsightly and Uncomfortable Veins
Dealing with varicose veins can be painful and embarrassing. Unlike some health issues, once they appear, there really is no way for people to reduce their appearance or make them go away on their own. Despite the fact that these veins are not dangerous to the overall health of the individual, most people want them removed. This can be done as an outpatient procedure, usually by a vascular surgeron. Luckily, the treatment is nearly painless, has very few risks and will improve the appearance of the legs, as well as the comfort of the patient, almost immediately.
Varicose veins can appear anywhere, but are most often seen on the legs. This is because the legs are the area of the body most likely to experience regular pressure and poor circulation. Women are more susceptible to problems with their veins. A large part of this is because of pregnancy, but it can also be from wearing high heels, and from fluctuating weight. Regardless of why they appear, most people just want them gone as soon as possible.
There really is no vein repair surgery. In order to treat the veins, the doctor will actually destroy them. This does not harm the body, as other veins are able to transport the blood. Since most of these veins are already not performing their jobs adequately, removing them may actually improve circulation. The methods doctors use varies.
With a varicose vein repair the surgeon can make a small incision and remove the vein. This process is typically known as stripping. Less invasive method include injecting a chemical into the vein that will cause it to collapse and eventually dissolve, or using a laser to fuse the vein closed, also causing it to collapse.
With all treatments, the patient should expect to wear support stockings or bandages following the surgery. They will need to take it easy for a few days or weeks after the procedure. The time to recover will depend on the procedure used, the age of the patient and the number of veins treated. After the body is healed the patient must change their behaviors that could create more varicose veins. Walking regularly, avoiding sitting or standing in one position for multiple hours each day and staying at a healthy weight are basic suggestions that can make a huge difference. Most surgeons will provide full instructions for their patients before and after their procedure, based on what their own specific needs are.
